What is MTN Mobile Money?

MTN Mobile Money is an electronic service that lets you send and receive money anywhere in Zambia using your MTN cellphone. With MTN Mobile Money, you can send any amount of money up to K10 million to anyone in Zambia every day! MTN Mobile Money provides a fast, secure, affordable and convenient way to send money to anyone on their cellphone anywhere in Zambia no matter the network. This service is available to every MTN Mobile customer.

Getting started

  1. You will firstly need to have a MTN SIM Card, visit any authorised MTN Mobile Money agent
  2. The agent will take you through the FREE registration process
  3. Fill out a registration form
  4. Make sure to have an original and a photocopy of any of these identification documents: Valid Passport, Driver's License, or NRC ID Card
  5. Complete registration and open an account with a balance of ZMK 0

How to use MTN Mobile Money?

Deposit MTN Mobile Money

Provide the following at an authorised MTN Mobile Money Agent:
  • Your MTN mobile number, which doubles as your MTN Mobile Money account number
  • The amount of money (CASH) you wish to deposit onto your MTN Mobile Money account. Hand the CASH to the MTN Mobile Money Agent
  • Your ID document
  • You will receive confirmation via SMS that your account has been credited with the amount deposited.

Send MTN Mobile Money

Sending money to another mobile user (MTN or any other network):
  • Dial *303# select 'Send Money'
  • Select Send Money to 'Mobile User' OR 'Non Mobile User' and follow the prompts
  • You and your recipient will receive an SMS notification when the transaction is successfully completed

Withdraw MTN Mobile Money

Mobile Money can ONLY be withdrawn from an authorised MTN Mobile Money Agent.

As a registered MTN Mobile Money recipient you will have to provide the agent with:
  • Your Mobile Money account number
  • Your ID document
  • The amount you wish to withdraw
The Agent will initiate the withdrawal, and you will receive a message on your phone requesting you to confirm the withdraw by entering in your Mobile Money PIN. The Agent and you will receive an SMS confirmation with the transaction details. Your Mobile Money balance will reduce by the amount you are withdrawing.

As a non-registered MTN Mobile Money recipient you will have to provide the agent with:
  • An appropriate identification document
  • A token number (this will be provided to you by the person sending you the MTN Mobile Money)
  • Then personally enter the secret code into the agent's phone (this will be provided to you by the person sending you the MTN Mobile Money)

Buy Airtime

Buying MTN airtime for yourself or someone else, purchase as low as ZMK 1 worth of airtime:
  1. Dial *303# and select 'Buy'. Option 1 is to buy airtime for yourself and option 2 is to buy airtime for someone else. You will receive a confirmation SMS once the transaction is completed.

Extra MTN Mobile Money features include managing your account:

  1. Dial *303# and select 'My Account', you can access:
  1. Balance Check
  2. Mini-Statement
  3. Manage Favourites

FAQ

Go to any MTN service centre or authorised MTN Mobile Money agent. Present your original passport, driver's licence or NRC, along with a photocopy. The agent will take you through the registration process. Registration is completely free, and you can open your account with a balance of K0.

To make a deposit, you need to give an authorised MTN Mobile Money agent your MTN mobile number, and the amount of money you would like to deposit. You will receive an SMS confirmation that your account has been credited with the amount.

To send money to a friend or family member, you first need to deposit money at an authorised MTN Mobile Money agent as described above (You are only required to deposit if the amount you wish to transfer is not available in your current MTN Mobile Money account). All you need to do is dial *303#, select 'Send Money' and follow the prompts. The Sender and the recipient will receive an SMS notification with the transaction details.

You can withdraw mobile money from any authorised MTN Mobile Money agent, that are located countrywide. You'll need to give the agent your MTN Mobile Money account number, which is the same as your MTN mobile phone number, as well as your identity document and how much money you would like to withdraw. The agent will initiate the withdrawal, and you will receive a message on your phone requesting you to enter your Mobile Money PIN to complete the withdrawal transaction. Both the agent and you will receive an SMS notification to confirm the transaction.


If you send MTN Mobile Money to someone who is not a registered MTN Mobile Money user, the recipient will have to present the agent with their identity document, as well as a token number and secret code. They will then personally enter the secret code into the agent's phone.

Buy MTN airtime for yourself or someone else using MTN Mobile Money, dial *303#, select 'Buy'. Option 1 is to buy airtime for yourself and option 2 is to buy airtime for someone else. You will receive a confirmation SMS once the transaction is completed.

Dial *303#, select 'My Account', select 'Balance' and enter your MTN Mobile Money PIN. You will receive a SMS showing your MTN Mobile Money account balance.

Dial *303#, select 'My Account' and select 'Mini-Statement'. You will receive a SMS showing your last five mobile money transactions.

If you regularly send money to someone, you can add this person as a favourite. Dial *303#, select 'My Account', select 'Manage Favourites', then 'Add Favorite', you will then need to enter the 'Name' of your favourite, enter the 'Mobile Number' and lastly enter your mobile money PIN to complete the transaction.

You can also delete favourites previously stored. Select 'My Account', 'Manage Favourites' then 'Delete Favorite', Type in the name you want to delete, Enter your mobile money PIN to complete deleting the Favourite. After successful deletion of your favourite, you will receive a SMS confirmation message.

For security reasons, you can change your MTN Mobile Money PIN at any time. Dial *303#, select 'My Security', select the 'Change MTN Mobile Money PIN' menu and follow the prompts. After successfully changing your MTN Mobile Money PIN, you will receive an SMS confirming the change.
